Schrader

Valve Type - Schrader

Also used on many vehicle tires, Schrader valves are one of the most common valve types in the world. There is a small spring loaded valve pin at the head of the Schrader valve body which when depresed breaks the rubber seal and allows air to flow in or out. For this reason many bicycle manufacturers have opted to switch over to Presta valves in more recent years since they are more secure with they're threaded valve head.

Schrader valves have a larger diameter body so they won't necessarily fit through every rims valve hole. Many bicycle rims are designed to accomodate the smaller Presta valve type which have a smaller diameter. It is possible to enlarge the presta valve hole in the rim so a Shrader valve can also fit but is highly discouraged due to possible rim damage or failure, resulting in injury or death.

Schrader valves are also commonly found on air suspension products such as forks, rear shocks and some adjustable seatposts. Thanks to the external threads on the Schrader valve body, high pressure shock pumps can be securely threaded onto the valve allowing for much higher PSI than on a friction fit Presta valve.

Schrader valve cores can easily be removed from the end of the Schrader body if they are damaged and replaced quite easily. Valve core removal tools can be found in most automobile part stores and some bicyle shops.
