DOT 5.1

Actuation - DOT 5.1

DOT stands for Department of Transportation since it is the governing body which ensures DOT fluid meets the various standards set in place. DOT brake fluid is the most widely used brake fluid since its extensively used in the automotive industry.

There are several different types of DOT fluid including DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5 and DOT 5.1. DOT fluid consists of several ingredients which vary in quantity depending on the type of DOT fluid.

DOT 5.1 is most commonly used in the bike industry due to it's higher boiling temperature of 190 degrees Celsius. A high boiling point is important in a braking system where the creation of heat is its greatest enemy. When heat from the brake pads and rotor transfers to the brake fluid it will expand which increases the pressure inside the brake system. This fluctuation in pressure is commonly referred to as brake modulation because the brakes don't have a consistent feel.

DOT brake fluid is corrosive so its best to wear rubber or nitrile gloves while handling it to avoid any unnecessary skin irritation. Being Hydrophilic in nature, DOT fluid will absorb moisture; as the level of moisture increases the boiling point of the fluid will decrease. Brand new DOT 5.1 should have a dry boiling point of approximately 270 degrees Celsius while older DOT 5.1 which has absorbed moisture will have a wet boiling point of approximately 190 degrees Celsius.
